Unfurled: From Seclusion to Sea
K&J Gallery Special Project | Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2026
5 May 2026

About the Project

Following the great success of the 2025 project Resilience (千絲韌), K&J Gallery is proud to present its sequel — "Unfurled: From Seclusion to Sea". This work has been selected as one of only five Special Projects at Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong 2026, and will be unveiled from 14–17 May at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

The core object of the work is the traditional Chinese round fan (Tuanshan). Historically, for young women living in seclusion, the round fan was both an elegant accessory and a subtle symbol of restricted mobility. It was an object often associated only with "gentle femininity" — used to shield the face from public view. This installation seeks to reinterpret this object, breaking it free from its symbol of confinement and transforming it into a profound metaphor for revelation, historical perspective, and contemporary women's pursuit of boundless freedom.

Homage to Ma Yuan’s Twelve Views of Water

Ma Yuan’s Twelve Views of Water (Southern Song Dynasty) is a masterpiece in Chinese art history — a series depicting water in twelve different forms, celebrating its infinite variety. This project reinterprets that classic through a contemporary feminine lens.

Four female artists — Liu Jia, Peggy Choi, Yipang, and Yvonne Chow — have come together to create twelve Water Studies, presented across two main exhibition areas:

Area I: Fair Entrance (Completed Works)

Three groups, totaling eight round fan screens, have been completed in advance by the four artists. These works will be displayed at the main entrance of the fair, allowing visitors to experience the visual narrative from "seclusion" to "sea" the moment they arrive.

Area II: K&J Gallery Booth (Live Creation)

During the fair, the four artists will carry out live painting beside the gallery booth to complete the remaining two groups (four round fans) . This is a visible dialogue of creation — visitors will witness the artists taking turns to paint on the acrylic fan surfaces, merging their brushstrokes and inspirations into a unified seascape.
